| 内容記述 | This Griffis' Journal was written by W. E. Griffis (1843, 9, 17～1928, 2, 5) from April 1st, 1873 to September 17th, 1874. It is a continuation of the last issue. W. E. Griffis came to Japan in Dec.30 1870, after he had studied the new Scientific curriculum at Rutgers University in N.J. He was an American teacher (Yatoi) who had taught Japanese boys Chemistry and Physics etc. at Meishinkan (Fukuihan Hanko) and Nanko-Kaisei Gakko, the precursor of Tokyo Imperial University. This Journal is the latter half of the journal which he wrote while he was staying in Tokyo. He tried to teach chemistry and physics to the Japanese students, especially that he had experimented on the blow-pipe analysis etc. with his students. He clashed with "Japanese Bureaucracy" about his contract. But he enjoyed his Japanese lives by walking, riding, and traveling with his familiar friends, students and Magaret Griffis, his sister. It is very interesting for us to understand and know the Japanese life style and to know how the Japanese education modernized in early Meiji Japan from his Journal.I tried to transcribe the Journal. I could find out more problems with words and punctuation. Letters like f, g, j, p, q, z can cause these problems. And he sometimes used the term "Jap" that was offensive and derogatory. When such a term is used, I want to indicate by using sic in blank like [sic]. Finally, I wish to express my appreciation to Prof. Ruth J. Simmons, who is a senior curator of the Griffis Collection of Rutgers Libraries helped and advised me about the Griffis' journals that I had not been able to read. | |||||||||||
