| 内容記述 | This story, The Burning House, one of 16 ones in a striking collection from Ann Beattie is marvelously written poignant in that each character, the uppermiddle-class intellectuals in an urburn city reveals so much about how to live and feel in the daily life. Beattie has a real subject, and a highly interesting one. Her subject is the fate of her own generation that was in college and graduate school in the late 60's and 70's.This generation grew up in the shadow of the Vietnam war, and it was the first to have a free hand with sex and drugs. The main character, Amy in this story is in "the burning house" and her husband Frank is drifting up in space, free of the chaos and the debris, so unfortunately they don't seem to be able to communicate or understand eternally. But J.D. or Freddy cannot help her because he lacks the energy to help anyone, including himself, out of his predicament, preferring waiting or getting stoned. Beattie's writing is beguilingly simple.' she has one of the most distinctively clean style of any other writers. She has maitained her superior quality, depicting with exceptional perception all shades of the people and the places she know best. Her people are witty, affluent and troubled with a remarkable evocation of a disintegrated marriage, feel alienated with a sense of loneliness and loss. | |||||||||||
