| 内容記述 | How has Rosamund Stacey, the heroine in the Millstone established a new self? Very early in this story, she is independent, strong-willed and prospective young scholar, but has not touched the real world, affected by her parents'sense of moral, and due to her conspicuous intelligence. She devices an elaborate and excellent system for gratifying her needs. She dates two men simultaneously, getting each to understand that she is sleeping with the other. She actually abstains from sex. The one thing she can not dispense with is company. All she has to sacrifice is interest and "love" to people. That is, what she wants is touch without contact. And because she believes "camp" George, who she thinks is homosexual, may be able to give her this, she allows him to make love to her and thus becomes pregnant. Her unique sexual encounter is not a moment of communion or even of communication. In fact, it becomes apparent aerlier in the Millstone that "the Hamish pattern" is not simply her suspicion, fear, apprehensive terror of the very idea of sex. What she is actually rejecting is one of the consequences of sex, "love", in other words, spiritual contact, intimate involvement with another human being. Rosamund's poverty is spiritual, a result of her inability to accept love. And she knows it. Contemplating the birth of her child, she realizes that hitherto in her life she most successfully avoided the bond that links man to man. Much later, she reflects that if she asked more favours of people, she would find people more kind. What compels Rosamund to ask a favour, who could not even ask for love or friendship, is her obligation to her daughter, Octavia. She has inklings that becoming a mother will necessarily involve her with other human beings. Pregnancy makes her see that she was trapped in a human limit for the first time in her life, and she was going to have to how to live inside it. Becoming a mother does offer Rosamund an opportunity to break down the wall of her isolation and connect, lovingly and vulnerably, with another. That is, she touches the realities of the world and grows spiritually as a man, released from parents'middle-class ideal. But why does not she tell George that he is Octavia's father? And when he makes attempt to get through to her, she refuses it. She wishes they could sit in her flat, forever connected, but seems to have known that a connection so tenuous could not last, could not remain and entrance forever. She achieved that desirable feminist synthesis : that by remaining a single she has established her independence in relation to values other than the male-superiority, while through her motherhood she has affirmed both her flesh and her bonds with humanity. | |||||||||||
