| 内容記述 | The theme of 'comedy of manners' will be studied, focusing The Importance of Being Earnest (1894), Oscar Wilde's best work of four comedies of manners, 'farcical comedy' which the dramatist called. The plot of this drama reflects the national myth of the 19th century, inviting the world of fantasy. The main characters in this drama are seven; John (nickname, Jack) Worthing, JP who was orphaned and therefore is unsure of his name or identity, but he eventually learns his true parentage and name (Ernest) and can happily marry to Gwendolen, his beloved woman. Lady Bracknell, her mother who objects to her daughter's marriage with Jack and plays 'Gorgon' who embodies a typical 'Victorian worldly person, ' like Miss Prism, a governess and Revd Chasuble, a clergyman. They have a simple character and too clever to appreciate the beauty in the life. Argernon Moncrieff, whom Cecily Cardew falls in love with, practices the secret life of 'bunberying' to spend a life with pleasure. In the cast of dandies of The Importance of Being Earnest, no one suffers and sacrifices and this drama takes us into the world of the late Victorian nonsense. Jack, Cecily's guardian plays as character being wholly 'earnest'. But irony, wit, and cynicism are qualities in this drama. The abrupt conclusion of the action, in which the pun on 'being Ernest, or earnest' is loudly proclaimed and the play ends, making three happy couples. This frivolous lightness is an essential element in Wilde's drama of art in general. But, it was in the composition that Wilde's individualism in fact peaked.Wilde was conscious that his 'farcical comedy' was admirable for style, and created his peculiarity that transcended the genre of farce, delighting his contemporary audience. That is, he tried to express the anger, grievance, contempt, and love toward the hypocritical Victorian Age, the utilitarianism, in the farce, making full use of the ability of satire. | |||||||||||
