| 内容記述 | The theme of Will You Please Be Quiet, Please? Will be examined in this paper, following Carver's earlier period of life, in adversity. The struggle for critical and popular acclaim was long, painful, and sometimes hopeless. Carver married young and had two children before he was twenty. Caring for them, he earned money to support his family, yet the family constantly struggled financially, the Carvers twice declaring bankruptcy. John Gardner and Gordon Lish played a great role in the birth of a short-story writer of the twentieth century. The former taught Carver how to write a concise sentence and the latter carried the story, "Neighbors" in Esquire which gave Carver a clue to rise in the world as a short-story writer. In this story, with the Stones on vacation, the Millers, their neighbors assume the responsibility of looking after the plants and cat in their apartment. The Millers show no regard for privacy, opening cabinets and drawers and even trying on their neighbor's clothes. Through ridicule, Carver suggests both unhealthiness of the sexual relations between the Millers and inadequacy of seeking fulfillment solely outside of oneself. In "Will You Please Be Quiet, Please?", the title story, Ralph Wyman, the protagonist argues with his wife's adultery, leaves and gets drunk, gambles, is punched out by a mugger, and then, returning home, has sexual intercourse. Silence involves lovemaking, reconciliation and evolution. Carver depicts an ordinary couple fallen into a sudden pitfall in life. The narrator of "Night School" is broke, unemployed, out of school, stuck at home with his parents, his marriage having just fallen apart. This situation is typical of Carver's stories. That is 'Carver Country'. "What is it?" and "Sixty Acres" have the same situation. With Carver's first collection of stories, Will You Please Be Quiet, Please? In his earlier period of writing life, he breathed new life into the American short stories and recognized master of his own writing style. Carver showed us humor, tragedy, a sense of loss and uneasiness that dwell in the hearts of ordinary people in the 1970 s ; his stories are classics of our time. | |||||||||||
