内容記述 | The Central High School of Philadelphia was established as the second American public high school in 1838. And it was famous for science education in those days. The aim of this paper is to explore the course of study of the Central High School, its examination of a new Professor of Natural Philosophy and Chemistry in 1859, and its written examinations of Feb. 1861 on Chemistry and Natural Philosophy. The students in the Central High School of Philadelphia learned Chemistry and Natural Philosophy by labolatory studies and experimental demonstrations. They learned the practical topics in science. Such a practical method was one of the important methods for them to study science. Because in those days it was thought that "A knowledge of science is necessary to the achievement of the highest success", "not only the physician, but the lawyer, the teacher, the preacher and the statesman, who deal in different degrees with the body and mind man, should understand the facts and the laws of functions and development." William Eliot Griffis who taught Chemistry and Natural Philosophy in Japan, entered in the Central High School in 1859. His teaching methods on science are similar to ones in the .Central High School. I think that Griffis's science education in Japan(1871-1874) was influenced by his experiences of the Central High School. If we study the science education of the Central High School of Philadelphia, we can understand the historical background of Griffis's teaching in Japan. | |||||
